Greek carries an air of mystery. It’s ancient yet still very much alive, with a script that looks both intriguing and slightly scary. It’s the language of philosophers, poets, and some of the world’s most breathtaking islands.
But learning it?
That’s another story.

Why Should You Learn Greek?
Greek isn’t just another European language—it’s one of the oldest continuously spoken languages in the world. It carries a rich history, a unique linguistic structure, and a strong influence on many other languages.
Here are some of the best reasons to learn it:
- It’s the root of many English words: Greek plays a huge role in science, medicine, philosophy, and even everyday vocabulary.
- It enhances travel experiences: Whether you’re visiting Athens, Crete, or Santorini, knowing some Greek makes interactions more meaningful.
- It connects you to history and culture: From ancient myths to modern literature, Greek unlocks a world of knowledge.
- It’s spoken by millions today: While ancient Greek is a thing of the past, modern Greek is alive and thriving, with more than 13 million speakers.
While the benefits of learning Greek are clear, the challenges can’t be ignored either. And I believe that I’d rather know what I’m in for when I start learning a new language.

The Challenges of Learning Greek
Greek may share some similarities with other Indo-European languages, but it has plenty of unique elements that make it a challenge for learners.
- The alphabet: Greek uses a script that looks completely different from the Latin alphabet, and while it’s not as complex as Chinese or Arabic, it does take time to learn.
- Pronunciation: Greek has sounds that don’t exist in English, and getting them right requires practice.
- Grammar quirks: Cases, verb conjugations, and gendered nouns mean there’s a learning curve—but with practice and patience, you can master it.
- Sentence structure: Word order is flexible, which can make it hard to predict the flow of a sentence at first.
With these challenges in mind, it’s easy to see why some learners hesitate to take the plunge. That’s where Mondly steps in to simplify the process.
My Experience With Mondly’s Greek Course
As someone passionate about language learning, I’ve explored many language learning apps, but Mondly quickly became one of my favorites. I even invested in a lifetime subscription, and it’s not just me, my son is also using Mondly to learn Spanish, Turkish, and Russian (Mondly Kids: A Fun Way to Learn Languages?).
With over 40 languages available, I was curious to see how well it teaches Greek. So, I put the course to the test to find out what you can really learn with this app.
Mondly made getting started incredibly easy. The interface was simple and intuitive (and since I use it to learn Portuguese, Spanish (Spanish with Mondly: Can I Recommend This App?) and Turkish, I’m no stranger to how Mondly works). So within mere minutes, I was introduced to my first Greek words.
Unlike traditional learning methods that front-load grammar, Mondly lets you absorb the language naturally, building from words to phrases to complete sentences.
One thing I appreciated was how quickly I was able to start recognizing Greek words and forming sentences. The app gave me a structured yet flexible approach, allowing me to focus on practical language skills rather than just memorizing isolated words.
I liked that I could retake lessons as many times as I needed to feel comfortable with the learning material, and that also meant I got enough practice to remember what I was learning.
What Greek Can You Learn With Mondly?
Mondly’s Greek course provides a strong foundation in Modern Greek, focusing on practical language you can use in everyday situations. Here’s what you can expect to learn:
- Greek alphabet basics: While Mondly doesn’t provide an in-depth writing course, it introduces key letters and pronunciations.
- Essential conversational phrases: Greetings, introductions, and small talk.
- Travel-related vocabulary: Asking for directions, ordering food, and checking into a hotel.
- Common everyday words: Shopping, numbers, telling time, and polite expressions.
- Grammar through context: Instead of heavy explanations, Mondly helps you absorb Greek grammar naturally by showing it in action. It also has these great grammar tables that make things way easier, too.
Because Mondly is designed for beginners and intermediate learners, it’s a great way to build a foundation before diving into more advanced Greek study.
How Mondly Makes Learning Greek Engaging and Effective
Mondly goes beyond basic vocabulary exercises by incorporating interactive and immersive elements into the learning experience.
Here’s what makes it stand out:
- Short, structured lessons: Each lesson takes around 5–10 minutes, making it easy to stay consistent.
- Real-world conversations: Lessons focus on complete phrases and practical scenarios rather than just teaching random words.
- Gamification elements: Points, streaks, and achievements keep motivation high.
- AI-powered chatbot: You can practice simulated Greek conversations, helping you get comfortable forming responses in real time.
- Augmented Reality (AR) mode: This feature brings Greek words into your surroundings, making vocabulary more memorable.
- Virtual Reality (VR) learning: If you have a VR headset, you can simulate real-world conversations, adding a layer of immersion.
- Daily lessons: You get new lessons every day, ensuring you never get bored learning Greek. And if you complete all the daily lessons, there are weekly quizzes and monthly challenges to complete.
By combining these features, Mondly creates a more dynamic and engaging learning experience than many other language apps.

Your First Greek Lesson on Mondly: What It’s Like?
When you’ve signed up to Mondly (or if you have an account and changed or added a target language), you’ll see the learning path for Greek.
Mondly has added new content, so that’s great news! And you can see all the topics you can study—in any order.
I love that about the app since I can work on active vocabulary—the words I use the most, which help them stick in my brain. Win-win and all that.
Some of the topics you can study in Greek are numbers, family, travel, and seasons and time.
If you want to use Mondly for free, you can only access the lessons in the Hello topic, daily lessons, and one chatbot lesson.
Here are the lessons in the Hello topic:
You have to complete about 10 lessons in Lesson 1 and these types of exercises rinse and repeat.
In the first couple of exercises, you have to drag the English term to the correct Greek one. And if you are a complete newbie, the images are very helpful.
It mimics how kids learn—mom or dad points and says the word, and baby or toddler learns.
The next set of exercises tests what you’ve learned as you have to vertically click or drag—Tinder-style—the English or Greek.
Then you have to do some translations.
If you click or tap on the underlined “ist,” a grammar table pops up, which isn’t helpful in this lesson, but it will be when you learn more Greek.
More translation exercises follow, but you have to choose the correct options this time.
Once the lesson is done, Mondly quickly reviews all the words, phrases, and sentences you’ve learned. It is really fast, so just sit back and listen.
Next is what I call the congratulations screen. Here, you can see your score, how long the lesson took, and other stats.
Close the congratulations message, and you’re back in the Hello lessons. Click on the turquoise notes icon and use the pop-up to review the lesson. Or simply take the lesson again for more practice.
How Much Does the Mondly’s Greek Course Cost?
Mondly’s Greek course costs $9.99 per month, which is quite reasonable considering all the features included in the Mondly Premium subscription. However, since this plan only covers one language (Greek in our case), it’s best suited for short-term learning or a quick language boost.
If you’re serious about learning Greek, the yearly plan offers better value. At $47.99 per year, you’ll only pay around $4 per month—a significant saving compared to the monthly option. This plan is ideal for those planning to use Mondly consistently, as it offers full access at a much lower price.
What Makes Mondly a Great Choice for Learning Greek
Mondly offers a unique learning experience that sets it apart from traditional methods. Here’s why it works so well:
- Bite-sized lessons fit into any schedule: Whether you have 5 minutes or 30 minutes, you can always fit in a quick session.
- Practical language focus: You’ll learn useful Greek that you can actually apply in conversations.
- Visually engaging and interactive: Learning feels intuitive and fun.
- Great introduction to Greek pronunciation: Hearing native speakers helps you develop an ear for the language.
- Flexible and accessible: You can learn on your phone, tablet, or even using VR, making it easy to practice anywhere.
Where Mondly Falls Short
Like any language app, Mondly has its limitations. Here are a few areas where it could improve:
- Limited instruction on the Greek alphabet: While it introduces Greek letters, it doesn’t offer full lessons on reading and writing.
- Not ideal for advanced learners: If you’re looking for in-depth grammar explanations, you may need additional resources.
- Speech recognition isn’t perfect: It helps with pronunciation but doesn’t replace feedback from a real person.
- Doesn’t cover informal or slang Greek: Mondly focuses on standard Greek, which may not fully reflect everyday speech that includes slang.
- Best when combined with other resources: For a well-rounded Greek learning experience, it’s worth using Mondly alongside books, podcasts, or tutoring.
Final Thoughts
Greek may not be the easiest language to learn, but Mondly makes the journey enjoyable and manageable. With interactive lessons, real-world dialogues, and innovative features like AR and VR, it’s a great option for beginners looking to build a solid foundation in Greek.
