Mondly’s Spanish Course
When you consider using a language-learning tool like Mondly to teach you a language, it’s essential to know what languages are available on the platform.
Mondly has a broad offering with 40+ languages. And you can choose from many native languages to tailor your learning experience.
However, the app only offers European or “Spain” Spanish, so you’re outta luck if you want to learn Latin American Spanish.
While there is some overlap between the languages and you should be able to understand the other type of Spanish, there are distinct differences regarding:
- Pronunciation
- Vocab
- Grammar, like the past tense
But if you prefer to learn European Spanish, then Mondly has you covered.
Who Should Learn Spanish via Mondly?
Mondly’s Spanish course is ideally suitable for beginners, whether you are a kid, teenager, or an adult. The main Mondly app is great for teens and adults, while children can use the Mondly Kids app, ensuring the material they learn is age-appropriate.
Of course, if you want to dabble in language learning or need to learn Spanish for travel purposes, Mondly can help too.
If you have an intermediate level knowledge of Spanish, you can use the platform to review what you’ve learned before and practice certain skills to address your weak areas.
Upper-intermediate and advanced students won’t find any benefit using Mondly as the app doesn’t offer challenging enough material to further hone your skills or improve your fluency in the language.

The Spanish Lessons on Mondly in Detail
So what are the Spanish lessons on Mondly like?
The first set of exercises in a lesson is typically a mix ‘n match. For example, in the My Family lesson, you have to drag the English words to the correct Spanish. Or you have to swipe to match.
The next set of exercises teaches you phrases or sentences via translation, and you can click or tap on the words to get the translation or conjugation tables (with pronunciation).
There are also “choose the correct phrase” exercises, and then the lesson is complete. If you run through it, it’ll take you less than 5 minutes, but bargain on more time if you take notes and really engage with the material.
The “Lesson completed!” screen reviews the vocab. You can click on the words and phrases to see/hear the Spanish versions, and the Congratulations screen gives you points, a star score, and other stats about the lesson.
There is also a vocab reviewer to help you practice all the vocabulary from the lesson stack. It’s a swipe-style exercise where you match the Spanish to the correct English word or phrase.
When you look in the lesson/topic stack, the conversation and vocabulary lessons have a review feature. Clicking on the blue note icon opens notes about what you’ve learned, and I found this so useful for taking notes and engaging with the material in another way.
I’d suggest looking at this first to learn the material and then engage with the quiz-like lessons or exercises.
Mondly’s Free Trial
You can start learning Spanish with Mondly for free. The language-learning platform has a free version where you get access to:
- The Hello lesson stack that includes 6 lessons (family, greetings, meeting people, I have…, I drink…, and introductions), a conversation lesson, and a vocabulary review
- One chatbot lesson that gives you suggestions to help you learn, but you can also type your responses to practice
- A new lesson every day
If you complete all the daily lessons for a week, you can do the weekly quiz, and once you complete the month’s weekly quizzes, you can access the monthly challenge.
While this isn’t a comprehensive learning experience, it is a good start. Plus, you get to see what Mondly is about, so if you want to sign up for the Premium plan, you know how the app works and whether it’s a good fit for you.

Advantages of Learning Spanish with Mondly
- Choose from 32 native language options, such as English, Korean, Chinese, Greek, Polish, or German to learn Spanish.
- If you want to learn the basics, you can continue using Mondly’s freemium version and complete the daily lessons to learn more than what’s available in the Hello topic stack.
- You can also learn the basic Spanish phrases with Mondly’s free Language Phrasebook.
- There are various ways to learn Spanish, from interactive lessons and the chatbot to the VR and AR apps.
- The app mainly focuses on getting you conversational, so you develop your speaking and listening skills.
- The monthly and yearly subscription options are affordable.
- The lessons are compact, and you can easily learn a bit at a time with a lesson or two a day.
- Basic grammar instruction, and the conjugation tables are very helpful. Plus, there are a couple of grammar specific lessons you can do to strengthen your understanding of Spanish grammar.
- The review exercises and conversation builder at the end of each lesson stack is great for extra practice.
Disadvantages of Mondly's Spanish Course
- You can only learn European Spanish on Mondly. The app doesn’t offer Latin American Spanish.
- The lessons are actually mini quizzes, and while you can learn by doing little tests on each topic, it would be helpful if Mondly had an actual lesson from which to learn. I really like the summaries in the conversation and vocab review, and I use that to learn before diving into the quizz-like lessons.
- It’s great that you can complete Mondly’s lessons in any order, but there is no clear logic if you prefer the “i + 1” (or input hypothesis) teaching method so that knowledge you gain builds on what you’ve previously learned.
- You must complete all the lessons in the topic stack to benefit from the conversation and vocab review exercises.
- While you can select whether you want to learn beginner, intermediate, or advanced Spanish, there doesn’t seem to be much difference in the language material.
- You won’t develop or improve your reading or writing skills with Mondly.
- You don’t learn about the Spanish alphabet, the pronunciation of the letters, or why Spanish uses the inverted question mark.
- You learn via memorization and translation, unless you immerse yourself in the Mondly AR and Mondly VR apps.
- If you want to use the VR app, it’s not included in the Premium subscription, and you need a virtual reality headset, which is pricey.
- The Lifetime Access plan is expensive (unless Mondly runs a special) if you want to learn many languages.

Final Thoughts: How Effective Is Mondly?
Mondly’s Spanish course is effective for beginners. It’ll get you conversational so you can help yourself while traveling. And if you want to review your Spanish skills, the app will help.
Mondly has a range of interactive exercises and you’ll learn in a fun way, especially if you use Mondly’s augmented and virtual reality lessons. However, the Spanish course remains a starter in your journey to learning a new language.
Remember to experience Spanish and its diverse culture by immersing yourself in authentic material. And the more you can chat with natives and learn via real-world interactions, the better.
