Spanish is one of the top 5 most spoken languages in the world. More than 460 million people are native Spanish speakers, and another 100 million speak Spanish as an additional language.

While that’s a powerful reason to learn Spanish (think of all the new friends you can make), it is also valuable to learn the language if you love Spanish telenovelas and culture and if you want to travel, live, or study in Spain, Latin America, or South America.

Plus, speaking an extra language looks fabulous on your résumé.

Language-learning apps promise to make learning a new language, such as Spanish, super easy. The biggest pros about these apps is that learning is flexible and affordable.

However, the quality isn’t standardized. Plus, speaking an extra language looks fabulous on your résumé.

Here are the best Spanish learning apps that are effective, kind on your wallet, and user-friendly.

My Experience with Spanish Language-Learning Apps

There are loads of apps that will teach you Spanish, but exactly how do you know which ones are worth trying out? Plus, do you really have the time to download, sign up, and thoroughly test out the app? Probably not.

Here are my absolute favorite apps that I have personal experience with so you can learn Spanish with ease:

Begin learning a new language with Babbel! 🌟 Unlock up to 55% OFF your Babbel subscription today!

Highly Recommended Apps

  • Babbel: The app mainly focuses on developing your Spanish conversation skills, but you’ll learn grammar, pronunciation, reading, and writing, too.
  • Mondly: Mondly is an indispensable tool to effectively learn Spanish vocabulary. With 40+ topics, you can learn about greetings, the weather, travel, romance, and specialized business topics.
  • Lingopie: Makes learning Spanish fun and effective with Spanish series and movies with interactive subtitles.

  • Beelinguapp: Combines reading and listening through stories displayed in Spanish and your native language, making learning relaxed and entertaining.

Recommended but Average Apps

  • Pimsleur: If you’re an auditory learner, Pimsleur is great. The 30-minute audio lessons teach you Spanish vocabulary.
  • MosaLingua: The aim of MosaLingua is to help you remember and recall the Spanish you learned so you can use the vocab and knowledge in real-life situations.
  • Memrise: A great option to learn lots of words and phrases in Spanish.

  • Rosetta Stone: With immersive learning, you’ll mimic learning Spanish according to how you learned your native tongue as a child. You’ll improve your listening, speaking, and reading skills.
  • Lingvist: Helps to build up Spanish vocabulary quickly and specifically by teaching the most common words first. However, I don’t like the fact that the app is less suitable for absolute beginners and focuses on flashcards, which can become a bit monotonous in the long run.

  • Falou: Focuses on practical conversation exercises with AI-supported pronunciation training and everyday dialogs.
  • Tandem: With Tandem, you can communicate easily with native Spanish speakers and improve your language skills through real conversations.

Less Recommended Apps

  • Busuu: You can interact with Spanish speakers via Busuu, but the app doesn’t really help you learn new vocab or grammar.
  • Drops: Drops is an excellent visual app to help you expand your vocabulary in Spanish. But you won’t improve other language skills, so the high cost of a Drops subscription isn’t justified.
  • Duolingo: You can learn for free, and you may improve your listening, reading, and writing skills. But relying solely on Duolingo may not get you far in learning Spanish.
  • Language Transfer: Offers free, intuitive audio courses that teach Spanish naturally through listening and understanding. For visual learners, however, the lack of written support could be a disadvantage.

15 Tested Apps for Learning Spanish

Here are the 9 best apps I’ve tried and tested for learning Spanish.

I looked at the popularity and effectiveness of the app, teaching methods, the Spanish dialect it teaches, cost and subscription models, and user ratings and feedback.

1. Babbel - The Best Overall Spanish Language-Learning App

Created in 2007, Babbel is an effective language-learning app. Spanish is one of the 14 languages you can learn on the platform.

Babbel’s main goal is to get you conversational as soon as possible, and that’s why the lessons are heavily focused on teaching you active vocabulary and practicing your conversation skills.

It’s ideal for beginner and intermediate students. Unfortunately, advanced students won’t get much or any benefit using the app.

Mexican & Central American Spanish

Reasons to Learn Spanish with Babbel

  • Quick and varied exercises that take 10-15 minutes.

  • Memory training exercises with spaced repetition to ensure what you learn makes it to your memory palace.

  • Use Babbel’s Toucan web extension, podcasts, videos, games, and review features to learn Spanish.

Costs

You can try out the first lessons for free before committing to a subscription. Babbel offers a 20-day money-back guarantee if you don’t like its teaching approach.

The 2 main subscription options are:

  1. Babbel Self-Study (interactive lessons), starting at US$13.95 per month.

  2. Babbel Live (interactive and live group lessons), starting at US$99.00 per month.

User Ratings: 3.8–4 out of 5 stars

Babbel’s users love how well structured the language courses are and how you’re motivated to keep going. On the negative side, users don’t like that Babbel’s offering isn’t unique enough to set it apart from its more affordable competitors.

2. Mondly - The Best for Fun & Advanced Technology

Mondly was created in 2014 and is an award-winning language-learning platform. The app believes that learning should be fun, but it also leverages the most advanced technology, such as augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) to teach you a new language like Spanish.

In addition to Spanish, you can learn 39 other languages on Mondly.

The gamified app has a vocabulary trainer, grammar conjugation tables, interactive lessons, and chatbot lessons to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

mondly app

What Spanish Dialect Can You Learn with Mondly?

Castilian Spanish

Reasons to Learn Spanish with Mondly

  • Extensive vocab trainer since you can learn 5,000+ Spanish words.
  • Can choose which topics you want to study and in what order.
  • Access to AR lessons when you sign up for Mondly Premium.

Costs

Mondly has a very limited freemium version in which you can do the Hello lessons, a chatbot lesson, the daily lessons, weekly quizzes, and monthly challenges.

Mondly Premium has 3 subscription options:

  1. Monthly plan at US$9.99.
  2. Yearly plan at US$47.99.
  3. Lifetime Access at US$1,999.99.

The app often offers discounts, and I snagged Lifetime Access for US$99.99 in February 2024.

User Ratings: 4.7–4.8 out of 5 stars

Of course, users love Mondly innovative ways of teaching Spanish and the affordable monthly plan. Users complain about technical issues, the lack of detailed grammar explanations, and glitchy speech recognition software.

3. Rosetta Stone - The Best for Immersive Learning

Rosetta Stone is one of the best known language-learning platforms. Its Dynamic Immersion method dates back to the early 1990s since the app teaches you a new language similarly to how you learned your native tongue.

So if you’re learning Spanish, the app teaches you in Spanish, meaning you need to connect the dots (match images, words, and audio to the correct Spanish vocab and expressions).

This isn’t a spoon-feeding method where you can complete the lessons in 5-15 minutes a day, but learning via immersion is a highly effective way to learn a new language.

Spanish is one of the 25 languages you can learn with Rosetta Stone.

RosettaStoneApp

Latin American Spanish

Reasons to Learn Spanish with Rosetta Stone

  • Can learn via interactive or live lessons.
  • Learn online or offline for convenience.
  • Loads of additional learning resources like Conversation Tips, How to Say, Grammar Explained, and more.

Costs

You can only use Rosetta Stone when you subscribe, but there’s a 30-day money-back guarantee if you don’t like immersive learning.

Rosetta Stone has 3 subscription options:

  1. 3-month plan at a once-off US$47.97.

  2. 12-month plan at a once-off US$126.00.

  3. Lifetime plan at US$399.00.

The catch is you can learn only 1 language with the 3 and 12-month subscriptions, while you can learn all 25 languages with the Lifetime plan.

You can also sign up for live lessons, but Rosetta Stone isn’t forthcoming about the cost of these.

User Ratings: 4.7–4.8 out of 5 stars

Users love how the Rosetta Stone method of teaching helps them remember and recall better, but they complain about the speech recognition software and getting a score with each lesson that’s actually meant to teach (not test) you.

4. Duolingo - The Best for Free Learning

On my list of best Spanish learning apps, Duolingo is the one that wins the “most downloaded” category. There’s no denying how popular (and famous) Duolingo with its green mascot owl is, and one of the reasons why it’s so popular is because you can learn Spanish completely for free.

Duolingo, created in 2012, flaunts its gamified platform that keeps you coming back for more, which means you’ll complete at least one lesson a day. That’s a win because language learning isn’t always easy.

Spanish is one of the 42 languages that Duolingo offers.

DuolingoApp

What Spanish Dialect Can You Learn with Duolingo?

Latin American variety of Spanish, but accepts European and Argentinian verb forms.

Reasons to Learn Spanish with Duolingo

  • User-friendly design with animated characters and interactive lessons that keep you coming back for more.

  • Great Practice Hub so you can practice speaking, the vocabulary you learned, or improve your listening skills.

  • Playful learning with silly translations so you can giggle and have fun.

Costs

While you can learn Spanish on Duolingo at no cost, you’ll need to put up with ads and limited hearts and features.

Otherwise, sign up for:

  • Super Duolingo at $7.99 per month or US$47.99 per year. There’s also the US$71.99 family plan.

  • Duolingo Max at roughly US$30.00 per month.

User Ratings: 4.7 out of 5 stars

Duolingo fans love the user-friendliness and colorfulness of the platform that brings out your inner child, while negative feedback centers around how Duolingo must be supplemented with other learning material.

5. Memrise - The Best for Flexible and Intuitive Learning

Memrise, created in 2010, is a language-learning solution based on how people remember, neuroscience, and unique approaches to learning. The app teaches you the vocab, phrases, and grammar you need via immersion, vocabulary builders, and listening and speaking practice.

I really like how Memrise gives you an overview of the lesson’s content before you start.

Spanish is one of the 25 languages available on Memrise.

MemriseApp

Mexican Spanish

Reasons to Learn Spanish with Memrise

  • Listen to audio from native Spanish speakers in video format, giving you insight to facial expressions and the culture.

  • Complete the official Memrise Spanish language courses and choose from the many courses that Memrise community members upload (available on a new site).

  • Chatbot lessons that mimic real world conversations.

Costs

Memrise has a freemium version, but you’ll have to contend with limited lessons and ads.

The Pro Plan has no restrictions as you can access all of Memrise’s premium features to learn Spanish. Choose from 1 of 3 subscription options:

  1. Monthly plan at US$27.99.

  2. Yearly plan at US$11.00 per month (once-off US$130.99).

  3. Lifetime plan at US$199.99, which is the most cost-effective option.

User Ratings: 4.5–4.8 out of 5 stars

Memrise users love the use of native speaker audio and how effective language learning is, however, many are unhappy with the app’s update in early 2024 that removed the community courses (forcing learners to use the Memrise app/website and the new community courses site).

6. Pimsleur - The Best for Auditory Learners

The Pimsleur Method was created by Dr Paul Pimsleur in the 1960s. However, the Pimsleur app that you know today can be traced to 2018.

Spanish is merely one of the 50 languages you can learn on Pimsleur. The app is ideal for auditory learners since the main lesson is a 30-minute audio recording. Depending on your subscription, you can also complete interactive lessons and games to practice what you learn.

The Spanish course on Pimsleur has 5 levels with 30 lessons each. So you can start at the beginning and progress to an upper-intermediate to advanced student if you put in the work.

  • Teaches you via audio recorded by native speakers so you can learn the correct pronunciation and intonation.

You can try the first Spanish lesson on Pimsleur for free.

If you like the app, choose from 1 of 3 main subscription plans:

  • Pimsleur Premium costs US$575 for a complete course (with 5 levels) or US$150 per level (can only learn Spanish).

  • Pimsleur Audio Only for only Spanish costs US$550 for the complete course or US$119.95 for 16 hours (one level).

User Ratings: 4.5–4.7 out of 5 stars

Users love how well Pimsleur introduces new languages and gives you plenty of opportunity to practice what you learned. The users complain about technical issues and the pricey subscription options.

Learn languages quickly with Mondly Premium. Learn the language you’ve always wanted to learn. It’s fun, fast, and easy!

7. MosaLingua - The Best for 5-Minute Compact Lessons

Created in 2009, MosaLingua is a science-backed language-learning solution where you learn Spanish using authentic texts and multimedia resources. MosaLingua teaches you using videos, audiobooks, articles, books, MosaChat-AI, MosaStories, MosaSpeak, and MosaTraining.

  • Develop and improve your listening, reading, and speaking skills.

  • With learning methods like spaced repetition, active recall, metacognition, and the Pareto principle, you’ll remember and easily recall the new vocab and grammar you learned.

You can get a huge discount. Mosalingua often offers a 30% discount on the Annual Sale (US$41.93) and 98% on the Lifetime Access option (US$97.00).

User Ratings: 4.2–4.5 out of 5 stars

MosaLingua’s users love the app and how varied the Spanish content is. On the downside, some users mention tech issues, like their progress not syncing across various devices.

8. Busuu - The Best for Networking with Other Spanish Students

Busuu, founded in 2008, is named after an endangered Cameroonian language. The app promotes language learning by making lessons compact and fun.

You learn via video flashcards with real people, checkpoint quizzes, and interaction with the Busuu Community.

Spanish is one of the 14 languages you can learn on Busuu.

Reasons to Learn Spanish with Busuu

  • Interactive grammar trainer.

  • Get insider knowledge and language and culture tips when you network with the community.

  • Get certificates to prove your progress.

Busuu has a freemium version, but you unlock a lesson by watching an ad.

A Busuu Premium subscription costs US$13.90 per month, and you can choose whether you want to pay monthly, every 6 months, or yearly.

User Ratings: 4.7 out of 5 stars

Busuu users love the app’s content, the practical nature of the lessons, and how real people are shown in the video bits. Cons include technical issues and inconsistent content for the Spanish course.

The app you choose should complement your learning style and budget. And remember to immerse yourself in authentic Spanish material as much as you can.

9. Drops - The Best for Spanish Vocabulary

Drops was created in 2015 and you can learn Spanish and 49 other languages on the app. You’ll enjoy learning Spanish on Drops because it makes the learning process fun and visually appealing.

DropsApp

Reasons to Learn Spanish with Drops

  • You’ll focus on improving your Spanish vocabulary, making Drops a great extra language-learning resource.

  • User-friendly design.

  • With streaks and reminders, you won’t forget to complete your daily lesson.

Costs

You can use Drops’ limited freemium version, but then there are ads.

Drops Premium costs:

  • Monthly plan at US$13.00 per month.
  • Yearly plan at US$89.99 per year.
  • Lifetime access at US$159.99.

User Ratings: 4.7 out of 5 stars

Users love the interface and how it’s a great additional language-learning tool. However, the app is pricey considering it doesn’t teach you grammar or improve your listening, reading, speaking, or writing skills.

10. Lingvist – Best App for Fast Vocabulary Building with Smart Repetition

Lingvist was my go-to app when I wanted to expand my Spanish vocabulary quickly. It focuses on teaching the most commonly used words first, which made a big difference in how fast I picked things up. Learning these key words early on helped the language feel much more approachable.

The app covers all the basics—speaking, reading, writing, and listening. I liked the speech recognition feature and the native audio for every sentence, making it easier to get pronunciation right. The spaced repetition system was also useful, ensuring I didn’t forget words I had already learned.

Lingvist has a simple, distraction-free design that made it easy to focus on studying. I also appreciated the customizable settings, like adjusting the speed of spoken sentences to match my comfort level.

That said, the app isn’t perfect. It works best if you already have some basic knowledge, as it might feel overwhelming for absolute beginners. The heavy focus on flashcards can also get repetitive after a while.

Reasons to Learn Spanish with Lingvist

    • Flashcards and spaced repetition help you remember new words long-term.
    • Focuses on useful vocabulary for everyday conversations.
    • A level assessment ensures you begin at the right difficulty for your skills.
    • Try Lingvist free for 14 days before deciding if it’s the right fit for you.

Costs

  1. Monthly Subscription: $9.99/month
  2. Annual Subscription: $79.99/year (which breaks down to approximately $6.67/month)
  3. Family Plan: Up to 6 accounts for $119.99/year.

Additionally, Lingvist offers a 14-day free trial for new users who choose the annual subscription, allowing them to test the app’s features before committing to a paid plan.

User Ratings: 4.5 out of 5 stars

What stands out for users is the speech recognition feature and the clear audio that accompanies each sentence—these tools make it feel like you’re having a real conversation.

11. Tandem - The best App for Real-life Language practice with native speakers.

Tandem is a great way to practice Spanish by chatting with native speakers through text, voice, or video. It feels more like a natural conversation than a formal lesson, which makes learning more engaging.

I like that I can switch between messaging and calls easily, and the built-in translation tool helps when I get stuck.

However, the experience depends on who you connect with, so finding the right partner takes time. Time zone differences can also make scheduling tricky, and privacy is something to keep in mind.

Reasons to Learn Spanish with Tandem

  • Chat with individuals or groups using built-in features like translations and corrections to improve your learning.
  • Tandem ensures a secure experience with background checks and a reporting system to prevent misuse.
  • Most features are available without a subscription, making it accessible for everyone

Costs

The free version of Tandem allows users to find language partners and practice languages without any cost, but it has limitations on features such as translations and ads.

Tandem Pro Subscription Plans:

  • Month: $6.99
  • Months: $10.67 (approximately $3.56 per month)
  • Months: $34.99 (approximately $2.92 per month)

Upgrading to Tandem Pro provides benefits like unlimited translations, an ad-free experience, and enhanced visibility in the community.

User Ratings: 4.2 out of 5 stars

Users think that if you’re looking for real-world practice, Tandem is a useful tool.

12. Falou - The Best App for Real-Life Spanish Conversations with AI Feedback

Falou is all about speaking practice, making it a great choice if you want to improve your Spanish conversation skills. The lessons focus on real-life dialogues, covering topics like greetings, travel, and shopping. I found the AI-powered pronunciation tool helpful—it corrected me when I said phrases like ¿Dónde está la estación? wrong.

The app is user-friendly, with short, interactive lessons that fit into a busy schedule. However, while you can try it for free, many useful features, like extra listening exercises, require a subscription. It also doesn’t dive deep into grammar, so if that’s your focus, you might need another resource.

These prices may vary based on promotions and specific features offered within the app, and they are subject to change without notice.

User Ratings: 4.7 out of 5 stars

Users consider Falou a great tool for conversational learners who want to practice speaking right away.

13. Beelinguapp - The Best App for Learning Spanish Through Bilingual Stories and Audiobooks

Beelinguapp makes learning Spanish easy by using bilingual stories. You read in Spanish with a side-by-side translation, which helped me understand tricky phrases without constantly looking up words. The app includes a variety of content, from fairy tales (I enjoyed Snow White) to cultural guides and news articles.

Listening to native speakers while reading was a great way to improve pronunciation, and the karaoke-style text scrolling made it easy to follow along. The app is user-friendly, with stories for all levels. However, the free version is limited, and there’s little focus on speaking or grammar practice.

Users love the app because it helps expand vocabulary and boost comprehension in a natural, stress-free way.

14. Language Transfer - The Best App for Learning Spanish Through Audio and Logical Thinking

Language Transfer takes a unique approach to learning Spanish. Instead of drilling vocabulary or grammar rules, it helps you understand the language naturally through audio lessons. It feels like having a tutor walk you through concepts step by step.

The lessons are conversational and easy to follow. I finally grasped tricky verb conjugations just by listening to how they fit into real sentences. Since it’s all audio, I could learn while walking or doing chores. The best part? It’s completely free, with no sign-ups or ads.

That said, if you prefer visual learning, you might miss having written exercises. And while it builds a strong foundation, you’ll need extra resources for advanced skills.

User Ratings: 4.9 out of 5 stars

Users like Language Transfer for its stress-free and intuitive approach to learning Spanish. It’s a simple yet effective way to build understanding without pressure, making it perfect for independent learners.

15. Lingopie - The Best App for Learning Spanish Through TV Shows and Movies

Lingopie makes learning Spanish feel more like watching TV than studying. The app offers a variety of Spanish-language shows, movies, and short videos with dual subtitles. It’s a fun way to pick up vocabulary while enjoying real conversations.

Instead of traditional lessons, you learn through immersion. One feature I loved is tapping on words in subtitles to see their meaning instantly—these words are saved as flashcards for later review. For example, I finally memorized comida rápida (fast food) after seeing it in a scene.

The app is simple to use, with playback controls to slow down or replay tricky parts. Quizzes and flashcards after watching help reinforce learning.

My Final Thoughts About the Best Apps to Learn Spanish

You can learn a lot of Spanish if you opt to sign up to all 9 of my best apps for learning Spanish but that might be very overwhelming. I recommend using 1-3 apps, and Babble, Mondly, and Rosetta Stone as my firm favorites.

Of course, the app you choose should complement your learning style and budget. And remember to immerse yourself in authentic Spanish material as much as you can.

Happy learning!
