QUICK VERDICT: Duolingo Max is a great upgrade if you already use Super Duolingo and want clearer grammar tips and fun, interactive exercises. But if you’re looking for real conversation practice, it might not be enough.
As a polyglot and language-learning blogger, I spend a lot of time testing different apps to see what actually works. So when Duolingo’s PR team in Germany reached out and offered me a chance to try Duolingo Max for three months, I jumped at it.
Honestly, I was curious. I already use Super Duolingo to learn Turkish, Italian, French, and Spanish, so I wanted to see if Duolingo Max—the newest subscription plan from the language app—was an upgrade or just another expensive add-on.
Duolingo Max is currently the company’s premium subscription tier, boasting AI-powered features designed to provide deeper explanations and interactive speaking practice.
But does it actually help? And more importantly, is it worth the price?
After testing it in Italian, French, and Spanish, I have some thoughts. So here’s my honest, holding-nothing-back review of Duolingo Max.

But is it really a game-changer or just an expensive add-on?

What Does Duolingo Max Offer?
Duolingo Max isn’t just a premium version of the app—it’s Duolingo’s attempt to bring AI-driven learning into the language-learning experience. The goal is to go beyond simple exercises and provide real-time explanations and conversation practice.
So, what exactly do you get with Duolingo Max?
Roleplay: AI Conversations That (Try to) Feel Real
Roleplay is one of Duolingo Max’s biggest selling points. It lets you practice conversations with Duolingo characters, responding in whole sentences instead of just selecting answers.
The idea is to create a more interactive experience where you form thoughts in the target language rather than passively absorbing information.
In theory, this should help with fluency, and I liked that I could build my own responses instead of just following a script.
It’s a noticeable step up from the standard Duolingo exercises. That said, the AI does guide the conversation in a specific direction, meaning you can’t stray too far from the intended topic (or you know, give into your naughty streak). Still, it’s a fun and engaging way to reinforce vocabulary and sentence structure.

Explain My Answer: AI-Powered Grammar Help
One of Duolingo’s biggest criticisms has always been its lack of grammar explanations. Duolingo Max attempts to fix that with Explain My Answer, an AI feature that explains why an answer is right or wrong.
This feature was genuinely useful. Instead of seeing “a red X” and moving on, I could dig deeper into my mistakes and understand where I went wrong. The AI explanations were generally clear, though occasionally a bit generic.
For those who struggle with grammar, this tool makes a big difference. And while you can use external resources to explain grammar, it’s nice when an app is a one-stop-shop solution. You don’t have to pause after an exercise, launch an investigation to understand where you’re going wrong, and then return to the exercise when you know better.
How Much Does Duolingo Max Cost?
Duolingo Max is available as individual and family (up to 6 members in total) subscriptions. The cost is higher than Super Duolingo because of the additional AI features.
The cost of Duolingo Max is as follows:
- $29.99 per month or $168 (one-off) per year for a single user
- $240 (one-off) per year for the family plan (at $20 per month)
It’s worth noting that Duolingo Max is only available on mobile devices—not the web version—so if you prefer desktop learning, you won’t have access to these features. You do, however, have access to what Super Duolingo offers.
My Experience Testing Duolingo Max
Trying out Duolingo Max for three months allowed me to see if its AI-powered features actually improve the learning experience—or if they’re just another flashy upgrade.
Since I already use Super Duolingo for multiple languages, I wanted to see how much of a difference Max would make. I tested it in 3 languages, focusing on how well it helped with speaking and grammar.
Some features impressed me, while others felt underwhelming. At a higher price than Super Duolingo, I expected real value.

Roleplay: Does It Actually Help With Speaking?
One of the best parts of Roleplay is that it forces you to create complete sentences instead of relying on multiple-choice answers. I found this feature helpful for thinking on my feet and reinforcing vocabulary.
The conversations were engaging—though still somewhat structured. You can build your own sentences, but the AI keeps you on topic. It does a good job of maintaining the flow, but at times, the responses feel a little scripted.
The tone is friendly, and the feedback is encouraging, but it doesn’t always feel like talking to a real person. If you try to be too creative, the AI tends to nudge you back to the expected dialogue.
It’s not a perfect substitute for real conversations but a step toward making Duolingo more interactive.
Explain My Answer: A Game-Changer for Grammar?
I appreciated having grammar explanations built into my lessons. It made it easier to understand my mistakes, and I found myself remembering corrections more effectively.
Sometimes, the AI explanations were genuinely helpful, breaking down tricky grammar rules in a sensible way. Other times, the feedback was a little too generic, just restating the correct answer rather than explaining why it was accurate.
For example, when I made a mistake with verb conjugation in Spanish, the AI explained the rule, which helped.
However, in another case, the explanation wasn’t as helpful when I used a technically correct alternative word choice but not Duolingo’s preferred answer.
Still, this is a huge improvement over the usual “red X” with no context, making it one of Duolingo Max’s most useful features.
Technical Issues & Limitations
While Duolingo Max introduces some useful AI-powered features, it’s not flawless.
Video Calls With Lily: A Cool Idea That Falls Flat
One of the most hyped features of Duolingo Max is Video Call with Lily, an AI-powered conversation tool.
Unfortunately, it felt more like a novelty than a useful speaking tool. The calls were extremely short—around 30 seconds—and the conversations were too basic to provide real practice. I barely had time to say anything before Lily ended the session.
This feature doesn’t offer meaningful speaking practice—yet.
Other Bugs & Limitations
Beyond Video Calls, I didn’t experience major technical issues, but the AI interactions could sometimes feel repetitive or limited in their responses. I also experienced the occasional sound issues or tech glitches that come with general bugs in the system.
The features are promising with room for improvement.

Any unsupported languages will default to Super Duolingo if you’re on a family plan.
Similarly, Duolingo Max is mobile-only, so using the web version still gives you Super Duolingo features.
Is Duolingo Max Worth It?
Duolingo Max aims to provide a more interactive learning experience, but does it actually justify the price?
While it introduces some AI-powered tools, its value depends on how much you’ll actually use them.
Who Should Upgrade?
Whether Duolingo Max is worth it depends on your level and learning goals:
- Beginners: If you’re just starting, Duolingo Max can help with grammar explanations and interactive exercises like Roleplay, but it’s not essential. Super Duolingo offers enough for most beginners.
- Intermediate Learners: This is where Duolingo Max is most useful. Explain My Answer clarifies tricky grammar, while Roleplay encourages sentence-building instead of passive learning. Duolingo Max can add value if you’re looking to push past the basics.
- Advanced Learners: Duolingo Max likely won’t be worth it. Roleplay and Video Call with Lily are too limited to provide real speaking practice. At this stage, a tutor or language partner is a better investment.
For beginner-to-intermediate learners, Max offers structured explanations and light conversation practice. But if you just want ad-free learning, Super Duolingo is the better choice.
Are There Better AI-Powered Language Learning Alternatives?
If your main goal is speaking fluency, Duolingo Max might not be your best option. While Roleplay and Video Call with Lily introduce AI-driven conversation practice, they’re still somewhat limited in depth and flexibility.
More advanced AI-powered tools, like custom GPTs designed for language learning, offer a highly adaptable experience. Unlike Duolingo Max, where AI responses are confined to specific lesson structures, custom GPTs can generate personalized conversations, correct mistakes in real time, and even simulate native-speaker interactions.
There are language learning models (LLMs) tailored for specific languages, grammar practice, and even pronunciation training—offering more dynamic and flexible learning.
Other platforms, like ChatGPT-based AI tutors, Speak, or Elsa Speak, also provide freeform conversation practice with AI-generated feedback, making them stronger options for developing real-world speaking skills.
That said, if you’re already committed to Duolingo’s gamified learning approach, Duolingo Max does add helpful grammar explanations and structured speaking exercises.
Just be aware that you’re paying a premium for these features within Duolingo’s ecosystem, and depending on your learning style and target language, there may be more flexible or cost-effective AI-powered alternatives.
Final Verdict: My Honest Opinion as a Language-Learning Expert
WHY I RATE BABBEL WITH 7/10
Overall, I liked Duolingo Max, especially Roleplay and Explain My Answer, which add value beyond Super Duolingo. But Video Call with Lily was disappointing, and the price is quite steep for what you get.
Duolingo Max is a solid upgrade if you already use Super Duolingo and want better grammar explanations and more interactive exercises. But if you expect it to replace real conversation practice, you’ll probably be underwhelmed.
Would I keep using it?
I’m sticking with my Super Duolingo family plan for now, but I might reconsider if Duolingo improves these features.
