- Future updates and features, like new levels, languages, or tools
- Offline functionality, so you can learn anywhere
- No recurring payments, which is gold for families or long-haul learners
- Built-in guilt relief: if you don’t use it for a month or two, no stress coz you’re not “wasting” a monthly fee
Of course, the catch is that you have to actually use it so it’s not just a white elephant on your phone. And that’s where your learning style matters.
For someone like me who juggles multiple languages and loves bite-sized study blocks, lifetime subscriptions can be a smart long-term investment.
So which ones made the cut?

Mondly: The Surprisingly Useful Underdog
What I paid: €89 (a Black Friday steal)
Mondly gets side-eyed sometimes in polyglot forums, and I get it (read more: Mondly Review: What Have I Really Learned with This App?). It’s not the most in-depth platform. But if you want variety, unique daily lessons, content organized by topic (instead of a language tree), and short review-style lessons? It’s a win.
Here’s why it works for me:
- Over 40 languages, including less common ones like Swedish and Finnish (which are possibly on my language-learning bucket list)
- Augmented reality, virtual reality, and chatbot features, which are great for speaking practice
- Fun for dabbling, like when I want to bounce between languages I’m seriously learning and those I like trying out, all without judgment
- And again: offline access makes it easy to sneak in a quick session while the coffee brews
I don’t use it as my primary learning app. But as a sidekick? Especially for rare languages, to learn a specific topic, or to review? Totally worth the lifetime deal.
Duolingo Super & Max: The Addictive Habit I Can’t Quit
What I paid: Ongoing annual fee, no lifetime plan (yet)
OK, technically, this isn’t a lifetime subscription. But I have to include it because I use it like one. Duolingo Super (and now Max) are in my daily rotation—across all four languages I’m learning.
I love it for:
- Gamification that keeps me coming back
- AI roleplays and explanations for incorrect answers in Max, which are still limited but promising
- Great for vocabulary and listening refreshers
- Ease of use anywhere—airport, couch, dentist’s waiting room
If Duolingo ever offered a lifetime plan, I’d throw my money at it. No questions asked.
That said, I’d never use it as my only tool. The grammar is patchy, and the repetition sometimes borders on absurd. But it’s ideal for keeping your brain in language mode daily. And few apps do it better.

Lifetime Subscriptions That Aren’t Worth It
Not every app deserves a forever home on your phone, especially not at some lifetime prices.
Case in point: Rosetta Stone (read my review: Rosetta Stone Review: Is This Learning App Good?).
I wanted to love it. I really did.
But between the clunky interface, zero grammar support, and a method that feels frozen in 2003, I ended up frustrated and underwhelmed. The no-translation “immersion” idea might’ve been edgy once (and it might work for you, and that’s great!), but it’s a no thank you for me.
And for that price? You’re better off spending the money on an app that actually evolves with you.
How to Choose a Lifetime Language App (Without Regret)
Before you get hypnotized and tempted by a 60% off flash sale, ask yourself:
- Do I love this app enough to commit long-term?
- Is it updated regularly or stuck in 2015 design hell?
- Does it support all the languages I want to learn?
- Can I use it offline or on multiple devices?
- Is this app even aligned with how I learn: audio, grammar-heavy, flashcards?
