I tested this trial myself. After the trial period, the cost is US$12.00 per month, but you have to commit to a three-month subscription. Unfortunately, there’s no monthly subscription option, which I personally felt was a negative. However, if you fall in love with the app and want to make a long-term commitment, Lingopie also offers annual subscriptions at a reduced price.
The concept behind Lingopie is simple but effective. While you watch a series or a film, you can view subtitles in your native language and in Italian at the same time. If you come across a word you don’t understand, just click on it and Lingopie will instantly give you its translation and definition.
This feature makes the study interactive and contextual, which makes the learning process much easier. However, I found that the subtitles weren’t always accurate. Lingopie has received positive feedback in user reviews, with many people praising its unique concept and wide range of content. It fills a gap in the language learning community by combining entertainment and education. For many learners, learning a new language by watching TV series seems to be a refreshing and effective approach.

However, I had some problems installing the app as my old Samsung tablet was not officially supported, so I had to install the app on my phone.

Whether you want to improve your listening, speaking, reading or writing skills in Italian, Duolingo has something for everyone. Best of all, you can learn in a fun way and see how you’re doing.
However, there are some complaints about Duolingo. The app doesn’t offer Italian courses specifically tailored for travelling, it lacks detailed grammar explanations and it doesn’t offer a deeper insight into Italian culture. Despite these limitations, I mentioned Duolingo in my review because it is completely free to use. During my learning sessions with Duolingo, I encountered Italian travel vocabulary such as “comprare souvenirs” (to buy souvenirs), “Andiamo nel centro della città” (we are going to the city centre) or “una cartolina bella” (a beautiful postcard).
#6. Memrise
Memrise’s flexible approach to language learning makes studying Italian for travel effective and enjoyable. The app covers general basics as well as topics such as directions, airport interactions and weather phrases.

A key feature of Memrise is vivid visualisations and image ‘anchors’ for each word learnt, making it easier to remember. Users have the freedom to create their own word lists or access existing ones. The Italian courses are particularly suitable for beginners and cover a wide range of everyday and professional topics.
While the basic version of the app is free, a paid subscription greatly improves its functionality. All vocabulary is pronounced by native speakers, ensuring an authentic learning experience.
Despite its strengths, some users may find Memrise somewhat basic, especially those who want to study more deeply. The structured course design may also be too rigid for some, especially those who prefer more flexibility and adaptability.
