My tip: Choose Specific Reasons for Your Trip

Take a moment and think about your upcoming trip to Italy. Imagine situations you might face and write them down.

For example:

  • At the airport, when you collect your baggage or go through security.
  • If you want a taxi in the city to get to your hotel or see the sights.
  • At the hotel, when you check in, ask for a room or get information about your stay.
  • In a restaurant, to order food and drinks or ask for local suggestions.
  • Meet new friends or chat with locals.
  • To book tours or extra activities to make your trip unforgettable.

Here are some examples in Italian with English translation:

At the airport:

Italian: “Dove posso trovare il mio bagaglio?”
English: “Where can I find my luggage?”

Order a taxi:

Italian: “Posso chiamare un cab?”
English: “Can I order a taxi?”

Check-in at the hotel:

Italian: “Vorrei fare il check-in, per favore.”
English: “I would like to check in, please.”

Order in a restaurant:

Italian: “Vorrei ordinare il piatto del giorno, per favore”.
English: “I would like to order the dish of the day, please”.

Introduce yourself:

Italian: “Mi chiamo Anna. Piacere di conoscerti.”
English: “My name is Anna. Nice to meet you.

Book tours/activities:

Italian: “Vorrei prenotare un tour della città per domani, per favore”.
English: “I would like to book a city tour for tomorrow, please”.

These are just a few examples of situations you may come across during your trip. Think about which ones apply to you and make a note of them.

Comparison of Popular Apps for Learning Italian for Your Trip

In the following essay, I’m excited to share my own experiences with various language learning apps and share my favourite ones. We will take a closer look at the different courses, lessons and cost structures available and consider the pros and cons of these apps.

Together we will explore how these apps can facilitate and support Italian learning, especially for holiday trips.

#1. Babbel

Babbel is one of the world’s top language learning apps and offers a wide range of Italian courses. It covers topics from travel to culture and business, and is suitable for learners of all levels. What sets it apart is its focus on developing conversational skills through interactive exercises.

When you register, you can specifically choose ‘For a planned trip’ as your learning goal. This gives you access to over 130 hours of learning material, including 20 hours of Italian content designed for travel. It’s a smart way to prepare for your next trip. For more information, read my article on whether learning Italian with Babbel is a hit or a miss.

babbel mobile screen

The Babbel app introduces users to the basics of Italian grammar and vocabulary. It starts with essential grammatical structures and basic words. Users can deepen their language skills and work on their pronunciation through fill-in-the-blank exercises.

More complex exercises are unlocked as they progress. The app encourages participants to speak words into a microphone, form challenging sentences, and translate specific expressions. You can find more information about the Babbel app through our articles Babbel vs Rosetta Stone: Which Language App Stands Out?” and “How Much Does Babbel Cost?” Moreover, Babbel provides advanced courses on its website that offer profound cultural insights, which make learning Italian even more rewarding, especially when travelling.

Babbel Live offers interactive online Italian lessons for your travels, taught by qualified and experienced Italian teachers selected by Babbel. The classes are kept small, with a maximum of six students, ensuring that each student receives personal attention. This approach boosts your confidence in speaking and makes your learning more effective.

Babbel offers a range of subscription options to meet your needs. The plans start at US$13.95 per month, which equals US$167.40 per year not including discounts. For those who want lifetime access to all 14 languages, Babbel offers the ‘Babbel Lifetime’ package for US$599.99.

Babbel learn Italian

Babbel confidently offers a free trial for the first lesson of each language course, and a 20-day money-back guarantee for those who find that Babbel doesn’t live up to their expectations. To use Babbel more extensively and access additional course content, you’ll need to subscribe to one of their paid plans.

#2. Mondly

Mondly is a popular language learning app that has won numerous awards. In the article titled ‘Mondly Review: What Have I Really Learned with This App?’, you can explore Mondly’s course offerings in detail. The app stands out for its innovative blend of translation tasks, interactive elements, comprehensive content, and modern features such as Augmented Reality (AR) and chatbots.

Mondly has an intuitive and user-friendly interface. It offers various learning formats, including text inputs, listening exercises, and image-word associations.

Mondly Learning Path

Mondly offers practical language structures that are useful in real conversations. These structures include greetings, farewells, and everyday dialogues. The focus is on practical language structures, not just repeated phrases or memorised vocabulary. It also includes over 300 lessons on topics such as travel planning, hotel reservations, leisure activities, restaurant visits, city exploration, and airport stays. Additionally, there are more than 50 realistic conversation simulations. Mondly’s approach promotes rapid language progress.

Mondly also provides over 2,100 daily exercises, weekly quizzes, and monthly tests to reinforce learning and establish an enjoyable routine. For further insights, you can read my review Mondly vs Duolingo: Which One’s Better for Learning Languages?

Mondly Lessons

Learning grammar can be a challenge. Although Mondly provides grammar units, it sometimes lacks systematic explanations of rules, particularly for complex expressions or sentence structures. This can lead to difficulties in understanding without additional explanations.

Mondly offers a free version with limited access to course content. To gain full access, paid subscriptions are required. Mondly’s yearly subscription currently costs US$47.99.

#3. Lingopie

Instead of struggle with boring textbooks, with Lingopie you can learn Italian in a fun way by simply watching Italian movies and series. Lingopie offers a 7-day free trial to give you a taste of what it has to offer.

I tested this trial myself. After the trial period, the cost is US$12.00 per month, but you have to commit to a three-month subscription. Unfortunately, there’s no monthly subscription option, which I personally felt was a negative. However, if you fall in love with the app and want to make a long-term commitment, Lingopie also offers annual subscriptions at a reduced price.

Lingopie screen

The concept behind Lingopie is simple but effective. While you watch a series or a film, you can view subtitles in your native language and in Italian at the same time. If you come across a word you don’t understand, just click on it and Lingopie will instantly give you its translation and definition.

This feature makes the study interactive and contextual, which makes the learning process much easier. However, I found that the subtitles weren’t always accurate. Lingopie has received positive feedback in user reviews, with many people praising its unique concept and wide range of content. It fills a gap in the language learning community by combining entertainment and education. For many learners, learning a new language by watching TV series seems to be a refreshing and effective approach.

Users appreciate the opportunity to improve their Italian in a real-life context, while immersed in Italian culture and enjoying their favourite shows. This natural and enjoyable approach to the learning process is what makes Lingopie a popular choice for language learners.

Lingopie Italian

Lingopie also offers a wide range of content that users enjoy. Whether it’s drama, comedy or reality TV, there’s something for everyone. This variety keeps learning interesting and motivating, making it fun for users to achieve their language goals.

Lingopie is available on both iOS and Android devices, allowing users to learn Italian anytime, anywhere. It’s an accessible and fun way to learn a new language, perfectly suited to the needs of language learners.

#4. Italki

Italki is the perfect choice for those who have a preference for face-to-face learning. It’s a language learning app that connects you directly with native speakers, allowing you to learn Italian as quickly as if you were there in person. Imagine if you had your own Italian friend to teach you the language in your free time – that’s the experience Italki offers.

In terms of cost, Italki has flexible prices as each teacher sets their own hourly rate. These rates can vary from US$10 to US$30 USD per hour.

This way you can choose a teacher that not only meets your learning needs, but also fits your budget. When I tested the app, I booked a trial lesson with a highly rated teacher for US$20 and was quite happy with it.

Italki Screen

The functionality of the app is also user-friendly. Right from the app you can:

  • book individual lessons and schedule them according to your own timetable
  • upload your own lesson materials and share them with your teacher
  • communicate with the teacher

However, I had some problems installing the app as my old Samsung tablet was not officially supported, so I had to install the app on my phone.

italki Italian

Italki receives mostly positive feedback on external review platforms. Users particularly praise the opportunity to interact with native speakers and the personalised approach to learning. However, some users have criticised the high prices charged by some teachers.

Therefore, it’s worth carefully looking through the different teacher profiles before making a decision. Despite these concerns, Italki offers a unique opportunity to learn Italian and prepare for your trip.

#5. Duolingo

With Duolingo, language learning is like a playful game. It’s a fun and innovative app that teaches you Italian through a variety of interactive activities. Whether it’s learning new vocabulary or understanding grammar rules, Duolingo covers all the important aspects of your Italian journey.

If you choose the annual subscription, it costs US$6.49 per month. The premium version removes the ads and gives you extra features to help you learn better. It’s worth a look, especially if you plan to use the app regularly.

Duolingo Review online

Duolingo is easy to use. You have to complete daily lessons with different exercises. We have more information about this app on pages like “What Languages Are Offered on Duolingo?” and “Rosetta Stone vs Babbel vs Duolingo: Which App is Better?”

Whether you want to improve your listening, speaking, reading or writing skills in Italian, Duolingo has something for everyone. Best of all, you can learn in a fun way and see how you’re doing.

Duolingo Learning Path screen

However, there are some complaints about Duolingo. The app doesn’t offer Italian courses specifically tailored for travelling, it lacks detailed grammar explanations and it doesn’t offer a deeper insight into Italian culture. Despite these limitations, I mentioned Duolingo in my review because it is completely free to use. During my learning sessions with Duolingo, I encountered Italian travel vocabulary such as “comprare souvenirs” (to buy souvenirs), “Andiamo nel centro della città” (we are going to the city centre) or “una cartolina bella” (a beautiful postcard).

#6. Memrise

Memrise’s flexible approach to language learning makes studying Italian for travel effective and enjoyable. The app covers general basics as well as topics such as directions, airport interactions and weather phrases.

It uses memory techniques and interval learning to help you remember what you’ve learned with just 5-15 minutes of practice a day. You can read more about the app in the article “Memrise vs Duolingo Review: Which App Is Better?”

Memrise Homepage

A key feature of Memrise is vivid visualisations and image ‘anchors’ for each word learnt, making it easier to remember. Users have the freedom to create their own word lists or access existing ones. The Italian courses are particularly suitable for beginners and cover a wide range of everyday and professional topics.

While the basic version of the app is free, a paid subscription greatly improves its functionality. All vocabulary is pronounced by native speakers, ensuring an authentic learning experience.

Memrise Learning plan goals

Despite its strengths, some users may find Memrise somewhat basic, especially those who want to study more deeply. The structured course design may also be too rigid for some, especially those who prefer more flexibility and adaptability.

My tip: Lack of motivation to learn? No problem – all the details and advice on learning motivation can be found on the page “How to Increase Motivation for Learning a Foreign or Second Language?”

#7. HelloTalk

HelloTalk is different because of its unique approach, which offers a partially free service concept. Instead of traditional teaching methods, the app facilitates connections between native speakers around the world. This allows users to learn Italian at any time by supporting each other through the proven concept of tandem.

For example, they can learn specific Italian for their travels by focusing on dialogues and vocabulary relevant to situations such as restaurant visits, city navigation, hotel reservations or museum visits.

HelloTalk screen2

To achieve a more effective language learning method with HelloTalk, you can choose from three different subscription options. The monthly costs for HelloWords Plus range from US$6.99 to US$12 for HelloTalk VIP. Access to the Pro-Teacher version requires a one-time fee of US$5.59.

Reviews of HelloTalk are mixed, with ratings ranging from 3.1 to 4.6 out of 5 stars on various review forums. Some users find the app highly motivating, while others criticize technical issues.

HelloTalk screen

One specific point of concern is the loss of communication history when the app is uninstalled. This means that users lose access to their previous learning content after a device change or reset.

It is worth noting the low level of advertising within the app. Furthermore, users appreciate the free access to the app’s key features as a benefit of HelloTalk.

#8. FunEasyLearn

FunEasyLearn is a free language learning app that offers diverse content and authentic pronunciation by native speakers. The app helps users to learn the alphabet, vocabulary and the basics of reading, and offers a wide range of games designed to improve listening, reading, writing and speaking skills.

The app also includes an advanced assessment system that continuously monitors users’ progress and optimises learning. FunEasyLearn offers an extensive range of 6,000 Italian words, divided into 10 difficulty levels, and supported by over 300,000 audio recordings. The vocabulary is simple and accessible to a wide range of users.

FunEasyLearn Homepage

You can learn Italian phrases and expressions with FunEasyLearn and use them in everyday life, while you travel abroad and even in business conversations. The app has divided the most common phrases into clear topics to make it easier to learn.

It is designed for both children and adults. Children can learn animals, fruits, and vegetables in a playful way, while adults can prepare for professional requirements abroad. The app covers a wide range of everyday topics, including learning specialized terminology, business communication techniques, and interactions with authorities.

The app provides words, along with phonetic transcription, pictures, and authentic pronunciation by native speakers. With 140 subtopics, the app is a comprehensive tool for language learners.

FunEasyLearn Italian

FunEasyLearn makes learning Italian an enjoyable experience through a variety of fun games, including:

  • A dictionary game
  • Find the picture with the flashcard method
  • Choose the word according to its meaning
  • Listen to the pronunciation and choose the picture
  • Match pairs of words to their meaning
  • Write the word on the picture

These games create an interactive and motivating learning environment for learners of all levels.

#9. LingQ

LingQ provides a dynamic and engaging language learning programme with 1000 hours of Italian audio lessons and transcripts. You can choose from a variety of topics, including travel, languages, culture, food, or entertainment.

The platform has a rich collection of learning materials, including articles, podcasts, videos and books, all written by native speakers. These materials aim to improve listening comprehension, expand vocabulary, and develop comprehensive language skills.

LingQ screen2

LingQ has a notable feature that allows users to import internet content using a browser extension and convert it into customized lessons. This feature enables users to add materials based on their interests and language level. Additionally, LingQ provides a vocabulary training tool that simplifies the saving and reviewing of new words and expressions to help users expand their vocabulary.

The app offers customised content, including articles, podcasts, and books, for those learning Italian for vacation purposes. These resources are designed to meet the specific needs of learners and are particularly useful for deeper understanding of the Italian language and a better knowledge of grammar and verb conjugation.

LingQ screen

One possible concern with LingQ is that it focuses more on passive learning methods and less on active ones, such as conversation practice or detailed grammar exercises. This could lead learners to require additional materials to gain a full understand of Italian grammar and verb conjugation.

#10. Speakoo

Speekoo is a language learning app that combines language acquisition with travel. Each level is associated with a city, and each lesson corresponds to a section of your journey. This app is ideal for people who love to travel and want to learn a new language in a new environment. It caters to both beginners and advanced learners who want to deepen their knowledge in a practical and lively way.

speekoo screen

Each level is designed like a virtual tour through a specific city, allowing learners to experience the language in a real context.

The app offers interactive language lessons that correspond to various travel scenarios. This helps users learn practical vocabulary and expressions. Additionally, the app includes elements of gamification to make the learning experience engaging and enjoyable for users.

speekoo screen2

In my opinion, there are a few things to consider. Firstly, the app has limited language options, which may not be for everyone. Additionally, the concept of a simulated trip may not be suitable for all users.

Advantages of Italian Learning Apps for Your Trip

Italian learning apps for travel offer a number of advantages, especially when you’re preparing for a trip to the beautiful land of pizza and pasta. The biggest advantage is flexibility.

With a learning app, you can learn anytime, anywhere. The app allows you to learn during your lunch break, while you wait for the bus, or while you’re relaxing on the sofa in the evening. You’re not tied to specific times or places like you would be with traditional language courses.

Furthermore, numerous applications are created with a playful approach, which makes learning more fun and less tiring. Learning can be fun, after all. Additionally, lessons are frequently divided into manageable sections, which prevents you from feeling overwhelmed and allows you to learn at your own pace.

Another benefit is the chance for interactive learning. Various apps provide features such as speech recognition for pronunciation practice or chatbots for conversation practice. The best part is that you receive instant feedback and can correct your mistakes immediately.

Conclusion: There is Always an App that Suits You.

The wide variety of language learning apps available allows every learner to find the right tool that matches their individual needs, goals, and preferred learning styles. The best app for you will depend on your personal preferences and goals.
