You also see the vocab in action with the conversation practice at the end of the lesson. I really like this part—for any language I’m learning on Babbel—because it gives context. And we all know that you can’t learn a new language in a silo. Context is everything.

On the language home page, you can do a placement test to find your ideal learning level, or simply start at the beginning with “Lesson 1: Hallo, wie heht’s dir? Part 1” in Newcomer 1 (A1.1) – Unit 1.
In Lesson 1, you start with simple greetings and introductions—like “Hallo” (hello), “Wie geht’s?” (how are you?), and “Danke” (thank you). These are phrases you’ll hear and use every day, so it’s a great place to start.
All in all, it’s a gentle introduction to the language, and by the end of the lesson, you’ll already feel more confident in speaking (very) basic German.
If you don’t feel confident to move forward with the next lesson, you can review the first lesson as many times as you’d like.
And even if you complete all the lessons in the Unit, there’s a recap so you can reinforce everything you’ve learned or to spot areas where you might need a little extra review.
For me, as someone who uses German daily, it was fun to revisit these basics and remember how challenging they once were. The app’s approach makes it easy to learn, and the repetition ensures you won’t forget what you’ve practiced.
